“CHILD’S PLAY” – The Review

ALDERNEY THEATRE GROUP RETURNS TO THE FESTIVAL STAGE

Alderney, 18 May 2026: The Alderney Theatre Group continues to make its mark on the Channel Islands theatre scene, following a string of successes at Guernsey’s annual GADOC One Act Play Festival. Over recent years, the group has returned to Alderney with multiple nominations and awards, including three trophies for Lee Flewitt’s last original play entry, A Wake”.

Now, the group returns with another bold and ambitious production –CHILD’S PLAY –  a darkly imaginative new comedy written by one of the Alderney Theatre Group’s most prolific playwrights, Lee Flewitt and ably directed by Charlotte Newton.

Known for producing original, thought-provoking theatre, the company once again pushes creative boundaries with a production that is both unsettling and deeply compelling. Containing adult themes and strong language, the play explores the uneasy space where innocence collides with something far darker.

At the centre of the story is young Elspeth, seen playing quietly in her bedroom surrounded by beloved childhood toys. At first glance, it seems harmless enough; simply a child lost in imagination. But once Elspeth falls asleep, the toys awaken, revealing a darker world hidden beneath the surface.

The teddies and dolls begin to tell their own story, offering the audience a glimpse into the strange and unsettling reality that Elspeth escapes into. As fantasy and reality blur, the production becomes both haunting and unexpectedly emotional.

The production features a talented seven-strong cast led by 7-year-old Willow Pycroft as Elspeth, alongside Rosie Evans (Dolly), Ian Corder (Soldier Boy), Lee Flewitt (Teddy), Tobias Hanbury (Bunny), Alex Flewitt (Raggy) and Marie Roberts (Lawyer).

The world premiere of CHILD’S PLAY took place at the Island Hall on Wednesday 13 May, where more than 200 audience members attended two performances and were sworn to secrecy ahead of the play’s appearance at the GADOC One Act Play Festival in Guernsey on Friday 22 May.

At the time of going to print, the judges’ decisions will already have been made and hopes are high that Lee, Charlotte and the cast will once again be returning to Alderney with further festival honours. ENDS
