ABOUT US

2019 marked the 70th anniversary of the Alderney Theatre Group.

Although officially formed in 1953 under the name of The Alderney Drama Club, it was actually initiated in 1949 by the SATURDAY CLUB which was started as soon and necessarily, after the islanders returned.

We are a Registered Charity/Non-Profit Organisation (No .CH488)

The Alderney Theatre Group’s Articles of Association specify its objective and raison d’etre, namely “to promote dramatic arts in Alderney” and just about every year since its formation, the Alderney Theatre Group has been true to its promise: producing shows, plays and entertainment, some home-grown, and some imported from the UK or the other islands.

In recent years, these have included performances on board a theatre ship, annual outdoor performances by the Rain or Shine Company during Alderney Week, the OddSocks and cabaret shows such as Shoo Shoo Baby as well as popular entertainers/comedians including John Shuttleworth and Dylan Moran.

Home-grown productions have ranged from pantomimes – “Dick Whittington” (February 2006) to ‘Stars in Their Eyes’, ‘Alderney Pop Idols’, the annual ‘Alderney Week Gala Night‘, and two spectacular outdoor performances of ‘Battle of Trafalgar’ (July-August 2005) and number of plays as well as play-reading performances. Our biggest ever production was the musical play ‘An Island Story’ (written and produced by the late Ray Parkin) , performed in December 2015 and our most challenging production was the open air musical spectacular MAMMA MIA, performed in August 2019 on Braye Beach.

Pictures of previous shows are published on our Flickr site. To view or download please click here.

Bringing artists and productions to the island is a costly exercise, involving flights, accommodation, artist fees and venue hire. Over the past few years, there has been substantial investment in upgraded and new lighting, sound and stage equipment and our home-grown productions involve additional costs of costumes, props, Island Hall and storage hire.

Clearly, without sponsorship, volunteers and a full house on the night, the Alderney Theatre Group would be seriously struggling.

We rely on the support of our members. Membership is only £5/year and you can join online. We would also like to take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks to all who have sponsored and assisted us over the years or supported our productions with advertising and donations.
