The Importance of being Earnest

Mon Aug 2 - Tue 3
Island Hall Gardens - Outdoor theatre performance by the Rain or Shine Theatre Company

Island is set to go Wilde next week (2-3 August)
What better place to spend a summer’s evening than watching theatre in the great outdoors?
This year the Gloucester-based Rain or Shine Theatre Company will be performing one of the greatest comedies of all time, Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy of manners, morals and morality
The Importance of Being Earnest!
When two Victorian gentlemen assume the name of ‘Ernest’ to win the affections of two ladies, both determined to marry a man of that name, the scene is set for hilarious confusion in a world of handba! gs, perambulators, cucumber sandwiches, muffins, butlers, the English upper class, and of course, that theatrical ‘tour de force’ – Lady Bracknell.

Directed by Alderneyman James Reynard, the professional troupe’s 64-date tour encompasses outdoor venues across the UK, from the Channel Island of Alderney to Northumberland, Wales and Norfolk, visiting some of the country’s most picturesque castles, stately homes and gardens.

The tour includes two performance in the Island Hall gardens, on Monday and Tuesday nights of Alderney Week at 8pm.

Tickets priced £12, ( £6 child) are available from Shirley's Boutique or on the door. Audiences are invited to bring their own low-backed seating or rugs, and a picnic to maximise their enjoyment of the al fresco performances. True to its name, the company is currently enjoying the hot summer, but bring your raincoat – just in case!

Tickets can be purchased from each venue, or online for the ent ire tour via www.rainorshine.co.uk.

Alderney Week Gala Spectacular

Wed Aug 4
The Butes Stage - starts at 8.00pm with the Alderney Blowers' Musical Prelude.

Let the luvvies and wannabe stars of Alderney entertain you to a night of "History Makers".
Ronnie Cairnduff, Lee Flewitt and Alex Birch have produced another fantastic show - introducing you to famous history makers, shakers and breakers.

Tonight history may well be re-written, but it’s so much more exciting than any other history lesson you’ve ever attended. Their songs and sketches will have you roaring with laughter or crying with joy. (….no change there then) with a line up of talent who have been rehearsing for the best part of last weekend.

You’ll be amazed and thrilled at the professionalism, the dexterity and the polished performances from the assorted stage hacks.

Written, produced, directed, acted, performed, painted, propped and costumed by Ronnie Cairnduff, Lee Flewitt and Alex Birch along with a great bunch of thespians.
Big thanks to the Blowers, Alan Roberts (band leader) and James Sear (music
arranger) and all the back stage crew and technicians, not forgetting the fantastic stage backdrop designed by Gerry Diebel.

And this show is free!

Myths and Stories from Ancient Egypt

Sat Sep 11
Island Hall: doors open at 7.30pm for 8.00pm performance

An evening of fascinating stories told by Dr Samira Kirollos

Storytelling, a worldwide phenomenon, used by all cultures since earliest man, is huge in the United States, enormous in Great Britain and is growing fast in popularity in countless other countries. Its social and educational uses are extensive and diverse and its entertainment value is unlimited. There are as many different ways of telling a story, as there are storytellers. The two way flow between the teller and his or her audience means that some words, thoughts, intuitions and interpretations will inevitably change with every performance. As is the case with many forms of art, you will understand and relate to tonight’s well-researched stories that have been passed on for thousands of years, in your own way. Stories have the power to take us on many positive journeys. Enjoy yours!

Dr. Samira Kirollos is a professional, international, master performance storyteller who obtained her Master of Arts Degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Minnesota, and her Ph.D. in Drama from Stanford University in California. She also spent two years as a Visiting Scholar at the Tisch School of the Arts in the Department of Performance Studies at New York University and has taught drama and storytelling up to university level

She will have you under her spell with the four stories that will be performed on the night:

The Creation Myth: The Heliopolitan version.
The Doomed Prince: This story comes from papyrus 500 at the British Museum.
The Tale of the Two Brothers: A New Kingdom Story.
The Lost Amulet: One of five tales of magic and one of three stories told to King Khufu while he was watching the building of the great pyramid.
Tickets £10 will go on sale at Shirley's Boutique from 16 August or you can pre-book online by email to info@alderneytheatregroup.com.
Fully Licensed Bar.

A John Shuttleworth Show – A Man With No More Rolls

Mon Nov 8
Island Hall: doors open at 7.30pm for 8.00pm performance

John Shuttleworth in A MAN WITH NO MORE ROLLS

"Sheffield's finest synthesizer player and twaddle talker" (Daily Telegraph) decides it's time to instruct the Nation in moral matters. Well, he would have done - if nextdoor neighbour and sole agent, Ken Worthington hadn’t mistyped the show's title, turning "morals" into "more rolls"

John's reaction to this mishap is philosophical. At least now his new show can consider - not just the Nation's moral decline - but the vast range of exotic breads appearing in the high street, as the humble roll fades into obscurity. Paninis, ciabattas, pittas, plus the peshwari naan which John recently enjoyed a bite of ("It absolutely blew me away"), inspiring his exciting new ballad "How's your nan?"

"How's your nan? How's your nan?" is more pressing a question than
Finding out about the state of an unleavened bread - that's what I said
"How's your nan? How's your nan?" Better find out while you can
Go and see her before you hear she's dead!

Also, in "Get the Volvo,Val", John will re-examine the tragic "moral" tale of Eric Blackburn ("no relation to the DJ") who crashed his hang glider 15 years ago on the Derbyshire moors. As well as these and other new songs, expect old favourites like "2 Margarines", "Eggs and Gammon", and "I Can't Go Back To Savoury Now" hammered out on John's trusty Yamaha keyboard. Also, Special Guests - the concreter from Goole, Dave Tordoff, ("His ignorance is comical bliss" ) and misanthropic Midlands media lecturer, Brian Appleton. (An inspired creation.. Spinal tap, watch your back!")

John Shuttleworth (AKA actor/small island lover, Graham Fellows) was recently heard on BBC Radio 4 in series 5 of The Shuttleworths which was twice made "Pick of the Week". His latest film, Southern Softies was screened recently on Sky Arts, and is available on DVD.

"Sublime creation" (Daily Telegraph 2010)
"A brilliant comic creation" (The Guardian 2010)
"Perfectly pitched deadpan humour" (Daily Mail 2010)
